Which Claude Plan Do You Need to Make Instagram Reels?

Any Claude plan works, Free included, if Ootto makes the reel. You need Pro or higher only if you want Claude Code to build the reels on your own computer.

The difference is where the video is made. Through the Ootto connector, Claude plans and writes the reel and Ootto renders it on its own machines, so the normal Claude chat on claude.ai, Claude Desktop or Claude Code is enough. Without Ootto, Claude has to run a video project on your computer, and that takes Claude Code.

We get this question in many forms: "Do we need to have a pro claud account for this", "It's only possible with Claude CODE right? Not with Claude web?", "Instead of using Claude, can I use ChatGPT?". Here is each case.

Can I make reels on Claude's Free plan?

Yes, through the Ootto connector. Anthropic lets Free users add one custom connector (Claude Help Center), and Ootto is one connector.

What Free can't do is run Claude Code, so the do-it-yourself route below is not open on Free. The Ootto connector itself needs a paid Ootto plan; what that costs is in Is Ootto free?.

Do I need Claude Code or is the Claude app enough?

It depends on who renders the video.

• A finished reel in your Ootto library, from one request: the Claude app (claude.ai or Desktop) or Claude Code, with Ootto connected.
• Reels you build and render yourself, on your own computer: Claude Code.
• Only a script, hooks and a caption: any Claude app. Claude writes text on every plan.

Do I need Pro or Max?

Only for Claude Code. Anthropic includes Claude Code in its Pro, Max and Ultra plans for individuals (Claude Help Center), not in Free.

For making reels through Ootto, a paid Claude plan is not required. It does give you more usage in a day than Free, which helps if you make several reels in one sitting.

Will making reels use up my Claude limits?

Some, yes. Claude's work counts against your plan's usage like any other chat.

What changes is how much work lands on Claude:

• Through Ootto, your footage is uploaded to Ootto, not pasted into the chat. Claude writes the plan and the scenes and looks at still frames when it checks a shot, and Ootto's machine does the heavy part: the voice, the render, the posting.
• In Claude Code on your own, Claude also sets up the project, installs what it needs, renders and fixes errors on your machine. That is more back and forth, and more usage.

Anthropic does not publish a number of reels per plan, and neither do we, because a 15-second reel and a 60-second reel are different amounts of work. On Pro, Max and Ultra, Claude and Claude Code share the same limits (Claude Help Center).

Can I use ChatGPT instead of Claude?

Yes. Ootto connects to ChatGPT too, as a custom server.

The plan rules there are different. OpenAI says full support for custom servers is on ChatGPT Business and Enterprise/Edu, and Pro can connect one for reading only (OpenAI help). Every step, checked in chatgpt.com, is in How to make Instagram reels with ChatGPT.

On its own, without a connector, ChatGPT writes scripts and captions but doesn't render a reel or post it. The same is true of Claude on its own.
